Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center Takes the Reins of Its Own HIV Testing Program

Memphis, TN, February 1, 2013: After a very successful three-year partnership with Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region (PPGMR), Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center (MGLCC) has begun its own HIV screening program. Our evolution to this point is a testament to the level of encouragement and support we received from community partners. “Our collaboration with Planned Parenthood has been a model of how agencies can work together,” says MGLCC Executive Director Will Batts. “From the start, our two agencies have seen this project as a true partnership focused on how we could better serve the Mid-South. Planned Parenthood has been an incredible partner.” With immeasurable assistance from Choices (formerly Memphis Center for Reproductive Health, MGLCC applied for and received funding from the Mid-South AIDS Fund.

MGLCC will continue to provide its regular testing schedule each Wednesday evening from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. Testing is on a first-come first-served basis and is open to all. Testing remains free and provides results in 20 minutes.

“Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region is pleased and proud to have helped Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center successfully get its free weekly HIV testing program started,” said Barry Chase, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region. “The program has been successful beyond everyone’s expectations, and is a tremendous benefit to the community by providing free testing in a comfortable, non-judgmental setting after hours. Planned Parenthood will continue to collaborate with MGLCC on many other outreach and educational projects. This collaboration reflects Planned Parenthood’s mission to promote healthy sexuality that is inclusive of the full range of gender identity, expression and orientation.”

Future plans include expanding the availability of testing MGLCC, outreach testing, HIV-positive support groups and integration of sexual health education throughout all of the programs and service offerings of the Center.

"Choices is thrilled to see MGLCC become an independent provider of HIV testing and prevention in our community,” says Jennifer Pepper, Choices Assistant Director. “It was an absolute pleasure providing capacity building assistance to them this past year, and we looking forward to continuing to partner to serve Memphis."
